Author Event: Michelle Johnson - Skill in Action kill in Action: Radicalizing Your Yoga Practice to Create a Just World will ask readers to explore the deeply transformational practice of yoga, and to become a social change agent to create a world that is just for all. The book explores liberation for everyone, while inviting readers to enact agency, whether that manifests as activism, volunteer work, or changing relationships with others and ourselves. As you read, you’ll be able to clearly define power and privilege, oppression, liberation and suffering, and you will be asked to make changes in your life in order to create a world that allows all of us to be free. The end of each chapter includes a sample practice so that readers can put this wisdom into action in their daily lives. These sample practices include: breathwork, asana, meditation and interpersonal relational work. In an effort to move toward liberation for all, the practices extend beyond the individual to offer resources and tools to shift institutional policies and procedures in a culture that has left all of us negatively impacted by white supremacy. It is my hope that Skill in Action calls you and your community to take action and to not become complicit via complacency. It asks that we take the powerful practice of yoga and use it to create a world that makes space for all, that values all and that speaks truth to power. Author Bio: I am a yoga teacher, social justice activist, licensed clinical social worker and Dismantling Racism trainer. I approach my life and work from a place of empowerment, embodiment and integration. With a deep understanding of trauma and the impact that it has on the mind, body, spirit and heart, much of my work focuses on helping people better understand how power and privilege operate in their life. I explore how privilege, power and oppression affects the physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and energy body. Before yoga, I was a clinical social worker and began my private practice in Chapel Hill, NC in 2001. I specialized in trauma, eating disorders and racial identity work. I have experienced the powerful transformation that comes with embodiment through the practice of yoga. In 2008, I went through yoga teacher training with the goal of infusing different treatment modalities into my practice to better help clients align their minds and bodies. I became a certified yoga teacher in 2009 and went on to complete a 500-hour certification in 2012. In 2015, I began leading my own teacher training: Skill in Action. This training is focused on the intersection of yoga and social justice and it inspires people to consider how they can radicalize their yoga practice to create a just world. I believe in social change and know that it is my responsibility to embody and inspire change. Can’t make the event? Want your own personalized copy?
