Charleston Author Series Luncheon with Charlotte Caldwell "The Faces of Local Food: Celebrating the People Who Feed Us" Join us Thursday, March 22, 12 pm for lunch at Halls Signature Events when Charlotte Caldwell presents her new book "The Faces of Local Food: Celebrating the People Who Feed Us" About the book: Why do we purchase milk, eggs, grains, vegetables, fruits, meats, and seafood from across the country and around the world when we could be purchasing these items from local producers? American writer, environmental activist, and farmer, Wendell Berry says, eating is an inescapable agricultural act.Berrys statement begs the question: Does the average person, as they sit down to a meal, think about their connection to a farmer, to the dirt, and to the sweat and hard work required for producing the food on their plate? Often we give thanks for our food, but how often do we give thanks and celebrate the producers of our food? Maybe eating is an inescapable agricultural act, but it seems the connection frequently escapes our consciousness and stops abruptly in a grocery store. In The Faces of Local Food, we step out of the grocery store and into the world of farmers, fishermen and ranchers; chefs and retailers to hear their storieshistories, motivations, experiences, challenges, and insights. In these fifty-two stories, we visit an urban food desert, a high-tech vertical farm housed within a shipping container, school farm programs, and the warehouse of a local food hub. About the author: "I was raised on Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, and graduated with a B.A. from Middlebury College, Vermont, in 1974, and went on to receive masters degrees in environmental studies and special education. As a young adult, I spent many hours exploring the magic of photography and developing images in the darkroom. Today, I use my photography as a springboard for storytelling. I serve on the non-profit board of The Nature Conservancy of Montana. In addition to hiking, golfing, traveling, and exploring, my husband, Jeffrey Schutz, and I love playing with our children, grandchildren, extended family, and friends. We divide our time between our ranch outside Clyde Park, Montana, and our home in historic downtown Charleston, South Carolina." Our location for the luncheon is Halls Signature Events, located at No. 5 Faber Street just behind SNOB off of East Bay. Halls Signature Events is a private events facility located in the heart of the French Quarter in Downtown Charleston, SC. The renovated historic space is the perfect venue for all types of events, from business lunches to weddings. There will be no refunds issued after 9:30 a.m. the day of the event because we commit to and pay for each luncheon ordere
