An Evening with Brian Kilmeade at the Heritage High School Auditorium in Wake Forest
Fox & Friends' Brian Kilmeade’s forthcoming Historical Thriller SAM HOUSTON AND THE ALAMO AVENGERS: The Texas Victory That Changed American History explores the story of the Alamo and will allow a new generation of readers to learn about one of the most pivotal moments in American history.
Another history page-turner from the New York Times bestselling author of GEORGE WASHINGTON'S SECRET SIX, THOMAS JEFFERSON AND THE TRIPOLI PIRATES, and ANDREW JACKSON AND THE MIRACLE OF NEW ORLEANS: In March 1836, the Mexican army led by General Santa Anna massacred about 200-250 Texans who had been trapped in a tiny adobe church in San Antonio for thirteen days. American legends Jim Bowie and Davey Crockett died there, along with other Americans who had moved to Texas looking for a fresh start. The devastating loss galvanized the surviving Texans. Under General Sam Houston, a maverick with a rocky past, the tiny army of settlers rallied. Just one month after the massacre, the underdog Texans soundly defeated the "Napoleon of the West" (as Santa Anna styled himself) at the Battle of San Jacinto. They secured the independence of the land their friends had died for. In his now trademark fashion, Brian Kilmeade explores hidden aspects of Sam Houston, the first president of Texas, and brings the reader to the scenes of one of the most pivotal moments in American history.
SAM HOUSTON AND THE ALAMO AVENGERS: The Texas Victory That Changed American History is available Tuesday, November 5, 2019 (Sentinel/Penguin Random House; November 5, 2019)

One Clean Feather--an evening with Julia Caroline Knowlton
Charis and the Agnes Scott College Department of French proudly celebrate the launch of Professor Julia Caroline Knowlton's newest collection of poetry, One Clean Feather. As Terry Wolverton, author of Ruin Porn writes, "In One Clean Feather, poet Julia Caroline Knowlton recounts her journey to cleanse herself of patriarchal violence—sexual onslaught and the brutality of being rendered invisible. In this collection, Knowlton invites us to “feel the soil in the mind of her most savage roses” in fierce and indelible imagery." Knowlton will

Celebrating Tiny Love: The Complete Stories of Larry Brown
Celebrating Tiny Love: The Complete Stories of Larry Brown "Larry Brown wrote the way the best singers sing: with honesty, grit, and the kind of raw emotion that stabs you right in the heart. He was a singular American treasure." --Tim McGraw A career-spanning collection, Tiny Love brings together for the first time the stories of Larry Brown's previous collections along with those never before gathered. The self-taught Brown has long had a cult following, and this collection comes with an intimate and heartfelt appreciation by novelist Jonathan Miles. We see Brown's early forays into genre fiction and the horror story, then develop his fictional gaze closer to home, on the people and landscapes of Lafayette County, Mississippi. And what's astonishing here is the odyssey these stories chart: Brown's self-education as a writer and the incredible artistic journey he navigated from "Plant Growin' Problems" to "A Roadside Resurrection." This is the whole of Larry Brown, the arc laid bare, both an amazing story collection and the fullest portrait we'll see of one of the South's most singular artists. Larry Brown was born in Lafayette County, Mississippi, where he lived all his life. At the age of thirty, a captain in the Oxford Fire Department, he decided to become a writer and worked toward that goal for seven years before publishing his first book, Facing the Music, a collection of stories, in 1988. With the publication of his first novel, Dirty Work, he quit the fire station in order to write full time. (The nonfiction book On Fire tells the story of his many years as a firefighter.) Between then and his untimely death in 2004, he published seven more books. He was awarded the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters award for fiction and was the first two-time winner of the Southern Book Award for Fiction, which he won in 1992 for Joe, and again in 1997 for Father and Son. He was the recipient of a Lila Wallace-Readers Digest Award and Mississippi's Governor's Award For Excellence in the Arts. The story "Big Bad Love" became the basis for a feature film, as did his novel Joe. This event is free and open to the public. When he isn't touring North America with brainy art-punk band PUJOL, Nashville-based multi-instrumentalist Brett Rosenberg is busy prepping and cooking Quichenight albums. The largely home-recorded efforts offer a diverse buffet of powerpop, tongue-in-cheek rockers, jazzy interludes, and freak folk, with a healthy portion of sticky hooks. If chef Rosenberg's recordings tend toward the lower end of the fidelity grill, his taste for seasoned playing and neo-traditionalist composition surely balances the palette. 2015's The Minor Sea was a beach-themed allegorical song-cycle which Nashville Scene said "took psychedelic surf rock to a new, modernized level." Quichenight have a new album called Dork In The Dark, out on cassette on Burger Records on Nov. 15th. Brett and band will join us for a free, all ages performance at Grimey's on Monday, December 2nd, at 6PM.
