Nashville photographer Bob Schatz and author Christine Kreyling collaborate for the first time on the coffee table book Nashville by Design: Architectural Treasures. The volume features 244 stunning photographs that introduce new ways of looking at major monuments as well as some hidden gems embedded in the citys landscape seen only by a few. Structures featured range from the 18th century to the present day. The emphasis on interior images highlights design details the casual eye may have missed. The point of this book, Schatz explains, is to get everybody to slow down, to see the lines of a building, to look at the details of a column capitalto really read the language of architecture. Nashville has so many great buildings and spaces. We go by them every day but dont take the time to really look, to see the details. The text by award-winning author Christine Kreyling illuminates the built facades, the method of their making and the history behind them. Together photographer and writer bring Nashvilles architectural treasures out of the chest, and display them on the page for all to see. Renowned photographer and Nashville native Bob Schatz has published five previous books. Christine Kreyling is the architecture and urban planning critic of the Nashville Scene whose bookssuch as The Plan of Nashville--and journalism have been telling the ongoing story of architecture in Nashville for two decades. Governor Phil Bredesen: Bob Schatz is an extraordinarily gifted photographer. He has a gift for using the play of light and angles to simultaneously find historical significance and newfound beauty in our buildings. Former Mayor Bill Purcell: Christine Kreyling understands the built environment of Nashville like no one else ad her words here ideally explain both the pieces and the placeand why we love it so.
