In 1864, the Confederate submarine, H.L. Hunley, vanished in Charleston, SC harbor. When Russ Berard's father, a Hunley enthusiast, learns of the diary of a Yankee spy on board the sub that night, he is murdered. Berard, a retired Rhode Island police detective, returns home to the Charleston area to investigate his father's death, and is confronted by a descendant of the spy, determined to keep the diary secret, and by an old friend determined to obtain the diary for development of a Hunley reality show. But why is the diary of a Yankee spy, the Hunley's ninth crew member, worth killing for so many years later? Finding the answers takes Berard on a journey through the history of Charleston as well as through his own past. Edgar award winner Bruce DeSilva says of The Ninth Man: "In a city as steeped in history as Charleston, S.C., the past isn?t dead; it?s not even past. Brad Crowther conveys its haunting power to perfection in The Ninth Man, a debut novel distinguished by pitch-perfect dialogue, a suspenseful plot, and a superb cast of characters. This fledgling series may do for Charleston what Laura Lippman is doing for Baltimore." THE NINTH MAN has been selected as one of the Featured Books of the Day leading up to the 2012 Killer Nashville mystery writers conference.
