Eva Norton, age twelve, homesteading in Colorado meets Buckskin Charlie, age fourteen, the son of the chief of the Soto Band of Indians. Their friendship builds trust between the families and shows ways to blend the two cultures. Louis Annance, a leading Abenaki Indian from Maine, says, “…it took two centuries and two bright kids to bring our cultures together. Norton’s book has found a way to celebrate the differences.” The series begins in the front range of the Rocky Mountains in the Colorado Territory and ends at the 1878 Paris World’s Fair. These gentle books have no superheroes, no space aliens and no gratuitous violence. Just two families living in a very difficult environment solving problems and learning and trusting each other.
