Adelicia is historical fiction, based on the life of Adelicia Hayes Franklin Acklen Cheatam, who after the death of her first husband in 1846, became the wealthiest woman in Tennessee. Adelicia and her second husband built the Belmont Mansion as a summer home. Adelicia, a woman of culture and breeding and great determination, finds her quest a noble truth, a conviction that throughout her life allows her grasp to remain unwavering for what is beyond. However, her heart lies in conflict with itself: does she bow to the dictates of society, or reach for the unobtainable against society’s dictates and reap the consequences? Adelicia is not defined by the times. She exhibits a powerful and willful spirit, one that leads her through both triumph and sorrow, through perils and conflict, yet leaves her with the drive to meet the unexpected with force and the will to endure and to overcome. She accepts responsibility for her behavior and does not surrender. Her spirit to persevere is unwavering. Joyce Blaylock taught English Literature at both high school and university levels. Ms. Blaylock lives in Nashville with her husband, Steve, and Gabby, the cat.
