Author Event: Elizabeth Minnich - Evil of Banality This book is a highly readable report of the author's deeply personal, secular philosophical quest to comprehend a troubling historical reality: that the actual daily work of what she calls “extensive evils” (such as genocides, slavery, destructive economic exploitation of people, of the earth on which we depend) is done by people who are otherwise ordinary, decent folks. If we understand how basically good people doing the work of massive harm becomes possible, we may also understand how to prepare ourselves and others – all of us neither monsters nor saints – this time, next time, to resist. Author Bio: Dr. Elizabeth Minnich taught moral philosophy at Queens University of Charlotte among other places, and is now Distinguished Fellow at the Association of American Colleges & Universities. Since earning her Ph.D., when she served as Hannah Arendt’s teaching assistant, she has practiced her fieldwork philosophizing through a wide variety of projects that bring people together to think, talk, and act, from serving on boards (e.g. for a statewide N.C. project on Medicine & Morals; the N.C. Humanities Council, which she also chaired; the Center for Humans and Nature) to writing op-eds for the Charlotte Observer. Her first book, Transforming Knowledge (Temple, 1990), won the national Frederic W. Ness Award. Can’t make the event? Want your own personalized copy?
