Avid Poetry Series: Aruni Kashyap and Soham Patel

Avid Bookshop presents the March installment of the Avid Poetry Series on Friday, March 23, from 6-7p.m. and will feature poets Aruni Kashyap and Soham Patel. This event will be free and open to the public. ABOUT THE POETS: Aruni Kashyap is a writer and translator. He is the author of the novel THE HOUSE WITH A THOUSAND STORIES (Viking/Penguin, June 2013), set against a series of widespread extra-judicial killings conducted by the Indian government during the late nineties to curb an armed insurgency. He has also translated from Assamese and introduced celebrated Indian writer Indira Goswami’s last work of fiction, THE BRONZE SWORD OF THENGPHAKHRI TEHSILDAR, for Zubaan Books (January, 2013) and is editing an anthology of short stories called HOW TO TELL A STORY ABOUT AN INSURGENCY (HarperCollins, 2018) by writers from Assam set against the Assam Conflict. He won the Charles Wallace India Trust Scholarship for Creative Writing to attend the University of Edinburgh in 2009. In addition to his English work, Kashyap writes regularly in Assamese. His novel in Assamese called NOIKHON ETIA DUROIT will be published in July 2018 and four other novellas have appeared in various periodicals. Soham Patel joined THE GEORGIA REVIEW in 2018 where she works as an assistant editor and manages the book review section. She is the author of five chapbooks of poetry including AND NEVERMIND THE STORM and NEW WEATHER DRAFTS (both from Portable Press @Yo-Yo Labs) and the forthcoming full-length collections TO AFAR FROM AFAR (Writ Large Press, 2018) and EVER REALLY HEAR IT (Subito Press, 2018), winner of the 2017 Subito Prize. Patel is a Kundiman fellow and a poetry editor at FENCE. She holds an MFA in poetry from the University of Pittsburgh, an MA in English from Western Washington University, and is a PhD candidate in creative writing at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee where she served for four years as a poetry editor at CREAM CITY REVIEW.
