Margaret Dardess and Layton Green discuss their new mystery novels Wed 1/31, 7pm: Margaret Dardess and Layton Green discuss their new mystery novels About Brutal Silence by Margaret Dardess: Alex Harrington’s genteel southern world shatters when two strangers drag her from a tourist bus while she's on vacation in Mexico City. She wakes on a grit-covered cement floor, head throbbing, looking up into the terrified faces of a dozen women and the brutal world of human trafficking. A champion runner, Alex escapes and returns to run her free clinic in North Carolina, haunted by the faces of the women she was unable to save. When a battered woman seeks refuge at her clinic, only to die moments later, Alex learns that human traffickers don’t only exist in Mexico. They are operating even in her home town, targeting her, and she has no idea why. Alex wants answers, but when the trail leads back to those she loves the most, she finds that sometimes it’s the most innocent and ordinary places that hide the most terrible secrets Proceeds from Brutal Silence will benefit organizations that work heroically to combat human trafficking. About Written in Blood by Layton Green: Joe “Preach” Everson, a prison chaplain turned police officer, is coming home. After a decade tracking down killers in Atlanta, and with a reputation as one of the finest homicide detectives in the city, his career derailed when he suffered a mental breakdown during the investigation of a serial killer who was targeting children. No sooner does Preach arrive at home in Creekville, North Carolina—a bohemian community near Chapel Hill—than a local bookstore owner is brutally killed, the first murder in a decade. The only officer with homicide experience, Preach is assigned to the case and makes a shocking discovery: the bookstore owner has been murdered in exactly the same manner as the pawnbroker in Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment. With the help of Ariana Hale, a law student and bibliophile who knew the victim, Preach investigates the local writer’s community. As their questions increase, a second body is found, this time eerily resembling the crime scene in a famous Edgar Allan Poe novella. Preach and Ariana realize that their adversary is an intelligent, literate killer with a mind as devious as it is disturbed. And one or both of them may be his next target. Margaret Dardess lives with her husband and three cats in Chapel Hill and Wilmington, North Carolina. She is hard at work on a second book that will take Alex Harrington to Margaret’s own native New York City and back to Mexico where Alex tries to build a new life as an international relief worker only to find that those she trusts the most are motivated more by greed than by charity. Margaret returned to New York after graduation from Connecticut College to study Japanese history at Columbia University, and after a brief teaching career at the University of Illinois, went on to tackle the law. When she finally stopped going to school, she set off on a journey, masquerading as an international trade lawyer, a corporate communications executive and a university administrator until at last she cast her parents’ warnings to the wind and began to write. Layton Green is a mystery, suspense, and thriller writer and the author of the Dominic Grey series, as well as other works of fiction. His novels have been optioned for film, nominated for multiple awards--including a finalist for an International Thriller Writers award--and have topped numerous genre lists in the United States, the UK, and Germany. In addition to writing, Layton attended law school in New Orleans and was a practicing attorney for the better part of a decade.
