In 1933, a brave, new experiment in higher education began in Western North Carolina. Four professors, fired from a college in Florida for refusing to take a loyalty oath, brought their new ideas and a handful of students to start Black Mountain College, offering a curriculum centered around the arts. The concept drew renowned professors fleeing Hitler’s Germany, attracted Albert Einstein to the Board of Advisers, and provided the workshop for Buckminster Fuller to create his first geodesic dome. Sixty years after its closing, Black Mountain College intersects the lives of Asheville detectives Sam Blackman and Nakayla Robertson. When an octogenarian client seeks their help in investigating the death of her brother, Sam and Nakayla hold out little hope for a solution. The death occurred nearly seventy years earlier. But the college is currently the setting for a movie production recreating the school in the nineteen forties. Sam and Nakayla hope to use the film’s research and some of the local old timers to garner information. The path they follow soon becomes littered with bodies. Are the murders crimes of the Present or events reaching out from the Past? The case pulls Sam and Nakayla into the vortex of both as Hidden Scars can mean deadly consequences.
