Why are we still so compelled by Mark Twain more than 100 years after his death? Kelly Justice, owner of Fountain, will interview a novelist and a historian on the subject in this "in conversation" event. Melissa Scholes Young was born and raised in Hannibal, Missouri and still proudly claims it as her hometown. Her writing has appeared in the Atlantic, Washington Post, Narrative, Ploughshares, Poets & Writers, and other literary journals. She teaches at American University in Washington, D.C. FLOOD is her first novel. Alan Pell Crawford is the author of Twilight at Monticello and Unwise Passions. A former U.S. Senate speechwriter, congressional press secretary, and magazine editor, he has reviewed books on U.S. history, politics, and culture for the Wall Street Journal since 1993. His essays have appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, Nation, and elsewhere. He lives in Richmond, Virginia.
