"Coral Gables", FL
Behind the scenes, as he runs Books & Books, Mitchell Kaplan has been wheeling and dealing, learning the ropes of Hollywood, as he strives to bring a roster of beloved books to the screen. THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS, based on the book of the same name by Les Standiford, is the first of what we hope will be a long line of engaging new films that will have taken their life and inspiration from a book. It’s produced by the Mazur Kaplan Company, a production company founded by Mitchell Kaplan and his partner Paula Mazur in 2006. Together, with the support of Marvin and Isa Leibowitz, they have selectively optioned an extensive roster of wonderful books that are now in various stages of development and production in Hollywood and will soon come to life on both the small and big screen. No film could signal as serendipitous or more appropriate a beginning for a bookseller turned producer than THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS, an ode to the book, the power of stories, and the writer’s craft. In it, we travel back in time to Charles Dickens’ England and step into the life and mind of the young writer as he courts, wrestles with, and eventually forces, his characters to life on the pages of what is now a timeless classic, A Christmas Carol. This heart-warming and delightful new movie stars Dan Stevens, Christopher Plummer and Jonathan Pryce, among others, and takes us on a wild journey through the weeks leading up to the publication of Dickens’ holiday ghost story, which as it turns out, was self-published in a race against time and the result of great struggle with inner demons and nagging creditors. Hats off, to our very own Mitchell for starting his new career in Hollywood with a film that celebrates books and writing with such accuracy and delight. It seems not much has changed in the publishing industry since then; even without social media, Dickens’ A Christmas Carol was an overnight success. So, too, we hope THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS will be greeted with great results at the box office! THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS will be released by Bleecker Street on 500 screens nationwide, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. In Miami, you’ll have a chance to see it first on Monday, November 20, when Books & Books hosts the Florida premiere, at the Coral Gables Art Cinema. Following the screening, there will be a Q&A with the director, Bharat Nalluri, the producers, Paula & Mitchell, Robert Mickelson, Ian Sharples, Vadim Jean, and the author of the book, Les Standiford. Post-event, cross the street to continue the celebration and share food and drinks to ring in the holiday season. Please join us! Tickets are priced at $100 for special seating at the screening and includes a copy of the book and the soundtrack for the film. $50 tickets are available for general admission, and the party to follow. This party benefits the Coral Gables Art Cinema, lovingly referred to as Films & Films, across the street from Books & Books. Monday, November 20, 7pm
