About Venue
Underground Books is a charmingly eccentric bookshop located below street-level in Carrollton, Georgia’s historic downtown district, just a mile from the University of West Georgia. With an emphasis on scholarly nonfiction and literary fiction, book lovers will find delightful browsing opportunities in many genres. Since we opened in 2011 we've built a loyal following for our well organized events and thoughtfully curated selection.
Get Lit West Georgia! is a new take on the bookstore author event -- a fast paced literary quiz game and variety show, hosted by Underground Books owners Josh Niesse & Megan Bell. We'll have multiple authors reading short passages or poems, live music, storytelling, trivia, humor, prizes and more! We will have copies of our author-panel members' books for sale, and we encourage you to come early and enjoy a brewery tour and tasting! Meet your Get Lit author/performer/panelists! DAREN WANG Daren recently announced his retirement from the AJC/Decatur Book Festival, which he founded 12 years ago and which grew into the largest book festival in the country. Daren joins us as part of his author tour promoting the release of his debut novel The Hidden Light of Northern Fires. Prior to the book festival he was a public radio producer and/or host for shows such as The Spoken Word, Porches: The South and Her Writers, Circle of Friends, Between the Lines, ArtVoice, and Atlanta Forum. His writing has appeared in Paste Magazine, Five Points Magazine, the Atlanta Journal Constitution, AJC Travel, The Saporta Report, and others. He is a graduate of Cornell University and lives in Decatur with his wife Eva. MAGGIE MITCHELL Maggie Mitchell (we all know her as Margaret, but she couldn't just go publishing her book as "Margaret Mitchell" now could she?) released Pretty Is, her first novel, in 2015, which received a glowing review from The New York Times, and she is currently working on a second. We'll try to pry some details out during the event. Mitchell has also published short fiction in a number of literary magazines, including the New Ohio Review, American Literary Review, and Green Mountains Review. Her story "It Would Be Different If" is included in the Bedford Introduction to Literature. She teaches English and Creative Writing at the University of West Georgia. ALISON UMMINGER Alison released her first novel, American Girls, in 2016 to widespread acclaim in the YA market. She grew up in Arlington, Virginia, and as an undergraduate was the fourth woman to be elected president of The Harvard Lampoon. Today, she is a professor of English at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton, Georgia, where she lives with her her husband, a blues musician, and their four-year-old daughter. American Girls was originally named My Favorite Manson Girl, but we'll let her explain why it didn't end up that way (at least for the American edition). STEVIE DICKS Singer-songwriter Stevie Dicks, the First of Her Name, The Unburnt, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men, Queen of Meereen, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Protector of the Realm, Lady Regnant of the Seven Kingdoms, Breaker of Chains and Mother of Dragons, is a Carrollton resident who blew us away with her musical, comedic, and rather naughty stylings at the inaugural Get Lit West Georgia! back in May.
