Concert and Booksigning featuring Kathryn Scheldt and Frye Gaillard Recording artist Kathryn Scheldt and Southern author Frye Gaillard will present their program, "The Quilt and the Poetry of Southern Music," September 9 at Books on Broad in Camden, SC. This unique evening of reading and music will feature Scheldt's acoustic performances of her original songs, which run the Americana gamut from folk to country to jazz and rock 'n' roll. Gaillard will offer brief readings from his various books, making the case that great Southern songwriters like Scheldt explore the depth of the human condition with all the power and originality of some of our finest novelists and poets. Scheldt, a native of Camden now living near Charleston, has recorded extensively in Nashville and other parts of the South. Her original song, "The Last Shrimp Boat," anchored the soundtrack of the Emmy-winning documentary film, "In the Path of the Storms," and her country hit, "Almost Cheatin'" reached number 8 on the New Music Weekly national charts. Gaillard, former Southern Editor at the Charlotte Observer and now Writer in Residence at the University of South Alabama, is the author of more than 20 books on Southern history, politics and culture. Among his critically praised titles are "Watermelon Wine: Remembering the Golden Years of Country Music" and (co-authored with Scheldt) "The Quilt and the Poetry of Alabama Music."
