In 1956, Olivia and her twin sister are born to a nun named Willard in an old auto parts store turned convent in rural Mississippi. Little Olivia doesnt survive the day. Instead, her spunky spirit hangs around and takes on the role of ethereal watchdog over her twin. When the Reverend Motherand holy guiltconvince Genevieve Baxter, Willards sister and a young pregnant newlywed, to take the living twin home and secretly raise it as the twin of her own child, Olivia realizes the urgency of her presence and support. Not only is Genevieve a fanatical Elvis fan, she is a renegade Southern belle, bent on self-indulgence and desperate to safeguard her multitude of sins. Years later, when Willard leaves the convent and returns home to the family flower shop in Iuka, Mississippi, Genevieve realizes that she has no choice but to move her girls, Louisa and Anna Beth, to Memphis to keep Willard from discovering her secrets. Between Genevieves Elvis compulsions and shoplifting arrests, Louisas inability to succeed at becoming an unwed mother, and Anna Beths determination to save the family name, Flowers for Elvis is a smorgasbord of Southern dysfunction. Narrated in the first person point of view by the spirit Olivia, and set with the backdrop of the Memphis flower industry, Flowers for Elvis tells the tragically twisted story of Genevieve, her obsession with the King of Rock & Roll, how it impacts her girls and ultimately leads them to wonder if they might really be the children of The King. Without revealing which girl is her twin until the end, Olivia takes the reader on a flower strewn tour of misguided love and maternal betrayal which culminates at Elvis funeral, where they finally discover the truth of their parentage and unravel the generations of secrets that shadowed their lives.
