The Ghosts of the Green Grass

The Ghosts of the Green Grass a hard covered book with handsome dust jacket is worthy of any Vietnam collection. The book has ten pages of photographs, over 60 primary source interviews, and many first time anecdotal stories of the soldiers, wives, and girlfriends who suffered through the chaos of sending their men to war in a far off land that make it not "just another guns and bullets story." The people and stories are real and woven around the odyssey of helicopeter troopers is that narrative of Custer's 1876 Seventh. The story is told primarily through the eyes of a handsome single enlisted soldier, a young married couple whose enlistment was scheduled to expire shortly, a young, married, medical services lieutenant with one child and another on the way, and myself, a 23 year old single lieutenant, who wanted nothing more than to spend time with his fiancee. World events of 1965 like those of 1875 would change our lives in unimagable ways over the five months from July to Thanksgiving. We four came home, but we brought unwanted ghosts with us and they would haunt us forever.
