Karen Matthews

Karen Matthews is a technical writer and the owner of Carolina Souvenirs, a business developing fresh new souvenir products for the North and South Carolina tourist industry. She has a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Alabama.

"The Legend of Lizard Lick: A North Carolina Folktale" is her first book. It is a children's picture book that tells the whimsical story of how the real place Lizard Lick, North Carolina, got its funny name. Hint - it has something to do with lizards and frogs fighting over the water drying up in a pond and how they resolve their dispute.

Karen Matthews lives with her husband, Richard, on a small farm in Sanford, North Carolina. Karen got the idea for the book when she lived in Wendell, just down the road from Lizard Lick. When she discovered the real reason Lizard Lick got its name had to do with lizards licking liquor on a fence, she thought to herself "that's not a story you can tell to children." So she decided to come up with a story suitable for children to fill the void.

This book features 26 full-color illustrations by award-winning Chapel Hill artist, Josh Taylor, and is worth the price just for the illustrations alone.

Kirkus Reviews writes: "A wholesome, down-home children's book, with fine illustrations and a kid-friendly moral."
