Marva Washington

Marva Washington was born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina. She attended public elementary schools in Charleston and graduated from Burke High School. She went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Education from South Carolina State College. After completing active duty in the US Army during the Viet Nam Era, she made good use of the GI Bill and earned a Master of Arts Degree in Mass Communication/Journalism from California State University, Northridge, CA. She has resided in CA since that time but had significant ties to SC since her parents and sisters still resided in the state. Both parents have since passed on but both left a lasting legacy for their four daughters. She still has sisters, a niece and nephews residing in South Carolina, so ties still exist. Bid Whist at Midnight is her first extensive literary work. She won an award for a short story and published a mini memoir in a recent edition of Good Old Days Magazine. All of her work is set in South Carolina. Bid Whist takes readers on a twenty year journey through time from the 1960s to the 1980s. Set in Charleston and Orangeburg, it is a coming of age story of four young women caught up in the enormity of the Civil Rights Movement particulary as it related to the Orangeburg Massacre in 1968. It is a strong romance novel in its own right, but it gains its legs in its social commentary and cultural concerns facing black women at the time. Being a product, herself, of the untamed 60s generation, she provides a view and a voice not previously written.
