Her newspaper career began at age eight on a bicycle along a country road as a Grit delivery girl, where the most enjoyable part of that job wasn't collecting her customers' money--it was reading the serial installments of the fictional story that appeared in each issue. Since her work first appeared in public in 1979, Daleen Berry has produced about 3,000 articles. Much of her reporting has covered domestic violence, rape and child sexual abuse cases. Ms. Berry has reported for and edited newspapers in West Virginia, Texas and California, and was a stringer for the Associated Press. She also was editor-in-chief of two law enforcement journals she produced, where she met and interviewed police officers from all over the country. Most recently her work appeared in "The Daily Beast," when she covered the La'Shanda Armstrong case. Ms. Berrys memoir, SISTER OF SILENCE, was honored with first place at the 2006 West Virginia Writers Conference in the Appalachian Theme category. She took second-place from the 2007 Maryland-Delaware-DC Press Association for her weekly column, Many Factors Involved When Mothers Kill, and first-place in 1990 for her investigative journalism work from the West Virginia Press Association. In 2004, while editor of The Columns, her staff received a record number of awards from the Society of Collegiate Journalists. She speaks out wherever she can, about the dangers facing single-parent families and children. She seeks to help audiences understand the crucial connection between empowerment and self-esteem, and how crucial it is to shatter the same silence that almost killed her and her four children.
