Vicky Alvear Shecter

Vicky Alvear Shecter makes ancient history come alive for kids. Her book, ALEXANDER THE GREAT ROCKS THE WORLD, shows children that history isn't just fascinating--it's usually a riot too! Who can top the fact that ancient kids played sports in the nude ("So how'd they know who was on whose team?")? Or that the Olympics started out as funeral games ("That makes sense, don't ya think? Our buddy just died--quick, let's race to see who's fastest!")? Or even, the fact that Greek warriors thought wearing pants was for sissies. Why? Because "real men" wore skirts! ALEXANDER ROCKS is a funny, past-paced book for kids aged 8-12. It earned a VOYA Honor List Award for Nonfiction and was a Junior Library Guild Premier Selection. Vicky is a docent at the Carlos Museum of Antiquities at Emory University and has been a featured storyteller at a number of Greek Festivals. Vicky usually comes to events with fun projects in tow, such as "Make Your Own Evil Eye" charms or "Make Your Own Mini-Catapults." Her next book, CLEOPATRA RULES, comes out fall 2009. www.vickyalvearshecter.com
